Olly Winder (b. 2002) is an artist based in London. Across the mediums of painting, sculpture and physical computing he is currently exploring the effects of biased, commercial AI systems on the human condition and how it can lead to the spread of misinformation. By looking into how these systems are being used to manipulate the masses, he deconstructs and purposefully breaks AI systems in an act of retaliation against them. His works include 'the dead internet paintings', being diptychs of painted, heavily compressed images that iterate with broken generated gibberish and 'go on, spit it out', an automatic AI-image-generation and response system using nonsensical prompts to continuously form recontextualised, nonsensical responses. His work calls for us to understand the capacity of machine learning and that these systems, yet powerful, are still open to certain misinterpretations and biases.
